This implies responsibilities, the obligation to take into consideration, that is to say to respect, all that lives:

Respecting oneself by avoiding harmful behaviour.

Respecting others in daily life, accepting that opinions, paths and people are different.

Putting into practice the “Code of Honour of Man towards the Kingdoms of Nature”, in which His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH reminds us of our duties towards the environment.

In Aumism, “understanding that the human, animal, plant and mineral kingdoms within the Earth are part of a Whole (…)” is the foundation of a harmonious existence.

TALK

Respect is a word we are used to hearing and used to saying, but have we kept its deep meaning? Our dictionary tells us that respect is “the act of taking into consideration”.

Life in society requires mutual respect in order to maintain the quality of life, and yet today we are confronted every day with a lack of respect. Daily we have to face acts of incivility, aggressiveness, violence, psychological harassment, and quite simply a lack of consideration, whatever people’s age. These problems are encountered even in hospitals. And our schools are far from spared, so much so that in France a Minister of Education called for the restoration of a “school of respect”.

Aumism, the religion of Unity, gives a primordial place to respect. His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH tells us: “The Ideal of Unity presupposes a value of tolerance and mutual respect that must be shared by all” (Vers un Age d’Or d’Unité, p. 141).

In this talk we will approach the notion of respect from three angles:

I. RESPECT FOR ONESELF

II. RESPECT FOR OTHERS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

III. RESPECT FOR NATURE

I. RESPECT FOR ONESELF

The human being stands at the summit of the Evolutionary Pyramid of the kingdoms of Nature: his consciousness has progressed through the mineral, the plant and the animal, following the law of Evolution, which leads him to aspire, consciously or unconsciously, to become the God that he is.

Self-respect is a duty which, when properly fulfilled, will allow the human being to continue his ascent. This duty concerns both the body and the mind:

The body is the temple of the soul; as such, we owe it respect by keeping it in the best possible state of health for as long as possible. This is why Aumists are against suicide, against the use of any drug, and against mortifications.

In His Teaching, His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH brings together the rules of a healthy life to help us maintain, or even regain, our health. Regarding the attitude to illness, Lord HAMSAH MANARAH tells us: “I insist that a sick body must not disdain the precious contribution of medicine in all its forms, including surgery. My position is therefore clear: depending on the illness concerned and its seriousness, recourse to antibiotics and to medicines suited to the case to be treated must be the rule” (Vers un Age d’Or d’Unité, p. 326).

Prayer and positive thinking will remain effective aids.

This respect for the precious body of flesh will be taught to children from their earliest years by applying the rules of healthy living: cleanliness of the body and of the living space, a healthy diet, and the practice of a sport, a martial art, yoga, relaxation, silence and joy.

In our mind, we will produce constructive thoughts, overcoming fear and anguish by remembering that thought, which has already been the subject of a talk, is at the origin of everything.

It is a duty to cultivate positive thinking and to move towards mastery of our unconscious, so that we do what we truly want.

Mental hygiene also means mastering our imagination while using it for the purpose of progress. For example, to encourage myself to keep up a quarter of an hour of hatha yoga every morning, I imagine myself at 90 leading a group of people in their forties on a mountain hike in spring! The energy gained through the practice of yoga is used for humanitarian activities. The person who truly respects himself also respects himself through others.

II. RESPECT FOR OTHERS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH writes: “Every man and every woman deserves our respect, deserves that we take the time to consider their situation and take them into consideration, which is the very basis of mutual respect” (La Révolution du monde des vivants et des morts, p. 461).

Respecting others means:

Knowing how to rediscover the courtesy of the heart, whose forms are set out at length from Lord HAMSAH MANARAH’s very first books. By rediscovering courtesy, we better understand what “to consider” means. Our physical and moral bearing and our way of being with others, from a handshake to giving up our seat to an elderly person on public transport, are forms of respect for others.

Knowing how to listen to others, whatever their opinions, religion, country of origin, political affiliation, colour, physical appearance, age or background: this is respecting them.

Knowing how to share one’s knowledge is respecting others. Often in our society, whatever the sector of activity, we tend to hold back information, thereby keeping power over the person who needs our skills.

Knowing how to accept difference means understanding that many paths can lead to the same goal, but also understanding that each person has their own pace, their own unique history and their own understanding of things, and that the moment when we meet another person is one moment in time on the ever-moving road of evolution.

Learning respect is part of the role of parents, but also of every teacher, whatever the subjects taught. Every moment of life, every situation and every profession involves rules of respect. Knowing how to observe them allows good communication with others and fosters teamwork: it is a source of daily happiness.

III. RESPECT FOR NATURE

The human being who respects himself is led to respect others, just as he is led to respect his duties towards nature.

Man, placed at the top of the Evolutionary Pyramid of the kingdoms of nature, has the duty to protect the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms that evolve in his wake. Many of us are aware of this: one need only look in the telephone directory to see the large number of associations for the protection of the three kingdoms.

To specify our duties, here are a few principles of the Code of Honour of Man towards the Kingdoms of Nature transmitted by His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH. “Man must:

Know that he cannot survive without nature,

Protect nature and the invisible beings who inhabit it,

Cease all violence and aggression likely to create an imbalance in the kingdoms of nature, which sooner or later would endanger creation,

Refrain from increasing the suffering of the mineral, plant and animal worlds by making them guinea pigs for unhealthy and often useless experiments,

Absolutely know how to manage waste individually and collectively,

In his heart and mind, replace the right he claims with the duty to be fulfilled,

Be at one with all that lives on earth and in the Universe.” (L’Aumisme, p. 206)

Today we are being led to become aware of our responsibilities towards the kingdoms of nature through many trials, for example:

The pollution of the seas: we all remember the pollution caused by the Erika, the Prestige and others. Rivers and streams are not spared either.

Floods, which lead us to rethink the maintenance of dykes, and forest fires, which force us to reorganise the upkeep of wooded areas.

Nuclear accidents, which compel us to reflect on the consequences of installations of this kind.

Diseases caused by food, meat in particular. We are thinking of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: men transgressed the laws of nature by feeding animal meal to herbivorous cattle!

These disasters force us to take responsibility, for they always sanction our lack of respect for nature.

Aumists, aware of their duties and respecting the Divine in all that lives, pray for animals, plants and minerals. Their prayers and blessings help each kingdom to evolve towards the next level within the Evolutionary Pyramid.

In conclusion, let us remember that all religions and philosophies encourage respect. Here are a few examples:

In Hinduism: “Do not do to others what would cause pain to you.” (Mahabharata 5:15:17)

In Judaism: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour. That is the whole law; the rest is commentary.” (Talmud, Shabbat 31a)

In Christianity: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” (Gospel of Matthew 7:12)

In Islam: “None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” (the 13th of An-Nawawi’s 40 Hadiths)

Indeed, learning respect for our body and our mind, extended into respect for others and for nature, is a source of harmony and solidarity on both the individual and collective scale.

We will therefore end with this magnificent quotation from Lord HAMSAH MANARAH, taken from the Code of Honour of Man towards the Kingdoms of Nature:

“Man must understand that the human, animal, plant and mineral kingdoms within the earth are part of a Whole, like the branch of the tree of life, like a wave of the Ocean, like a facet of the Diamond of Creation.”

Bibliography:

Books by His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH, Éditions du MANDAROM

Naturopathie et Yoga

Le Yoga de la vie pratique

Le Yoga de l’Amour dans la Force

L’Aumisme, la Doctrine de l’Age d’Or

Vers un Age d’Or d’Unité

La Révolution du monde des vivants et des morts

Back to the home page

RESPECT, A SOURCE OF HARMONY SUMMARY The Teaching of His Holiness Lord HAMSAH MANARAH shows us the bond that unites all the kingdoms of nature: consciousness evolves from the mineral to the plant, to the animal and up to the human, within the Evolutionary Pyramid.
