Why this theme for the 15th International Symposium of Aumism:
“Together for peace”?<\/h3>\n

Peace of course means the end of wars, and the role of those who lead nations cannot be denied.<\/p>\n

But what happens when, after the war, peace changes nothing in the desire for domination, discrimination and profit at any cost that has for too long distorted relations between human beings? Well, this accumulation of hatred and violence will go on tearing societies apart and give rise to new wars! As Voltaire said, “Humanity has so far never known peace, only periods between wars”!<\/em><\/p>\n

For peace at last to become genuine, that is, lasting and beneficial to all, a change of mentality is needed, one that can uproot hatred from human thoughts and actions, and help to resolve conflicts without entering the endless spiral of revenge.<\/p>\n

That is why, beyond the end of wars, peace as a way of living together, or rather of being together, must be built over the long term. Today we can see where the adage “If you want peace, prepare for war” leads; perhaps it is time to say: “If you want peace, prepare for peace.” It is this approach that we will talk about here, because it concerns every one of us.<\/p>\n

To the question “Can we contribute to peace?”, the answer is yes.<\/h3>\n

Defeatism is our worst enemy. Even in extreme situations, peace remains a compass: the compass of love. I will cite the example of a woman who, under bombardment, still said: “We can always offer the light of those who work for peace in a world of violence.”<\/p>\n

Moreover, we commonly speak of war and peace as if they were events outside ourselves. But we are all connected within the same humanity. The daily choices of each human being feed, in the world, the currents of fear, defeatism, hatred and war, or those of hope, courage, love and peace.<\/p>\n

Humanity can no longer bear the violence it inflicts on itself without hearing the alarm sirens.<\/p>\n

It is impossible to carry on in the direction of self-destruction.<\/p>\n

We must now leave the Age of wars, contempt and suffering, change course, and live fully in the Age of the respect and solidarity that peace requires, called the Golden Age, the Age of Aquarius or the new Age. It is awaited in all traditions, and longed for by so many human beings in a world that needs love!<\/p>\n

Today we can no longer say that it is a myth or a utopia: it is an urgent necessity.<\/p>\n

So how can we contribute to peace?<\/h3>\n

Without claiming to be exhaustive, this symposium suggests avenues for reflection and action inspired by the Aumist Teaching. Peace is won and cultivated. Preparing for peace already means exercising one’s freedom of choice within oneself, by working to master one’s own violent reactions and by cultivating inner peace. Ways of achieving this are offered.<\/p>\n

The choice of mutual respect is addressed in connection with religious tolerance: it is an indispensable step towards peace.<\/p>\n

Another important point: to be lasting, peace must place human interest (rather than mere self-interest) at the centre of the planet’s concerns.<\/p>\n

To reduce the inequalities that are sources of suffering and violence within societies and between nations, economic justice is discussed.<\/p>\n

The importance of a science that makes the vital choice of protecting the Earth is also addressed.<\/p>\n

This symposium stresses the need for a change of mentality. Hence the choice of educating children in the values of peace, while emphasising that a difficult start does not lock anyone into determinism.<\/p>\n

The speakers from outside Aumism whom we are very happy to welcome have all followed different paths, but they share an open mind… In turn, they will present peace as a profoundly spiritual requirement; peace from the angle of history, which calls for vigilance in the face of war propaganda; and from the sociological angle, which feeds fruitful reflection.<\/p>\n

Why the word “together”?<\/h3>\n

Humanity cannot be reduced for ever to its dark areas, its divisions and its violence. It needs to express its light, the best of itself. Women and men are already doing so wherever they are. But more and more of us must wage the daily battle for peace.<\/p>\n

We no longer have time to go on quarrelling, excluding one another, making one another pay for our differences of colour, sex, culture or religion…<\/p>\n

We must build, in unity, the foundations of peace on a patient, steady personal and collective transformation that benefits everyone.<\/p>\n

And this is possible if we first see what we share: the human condition from birth to death, with its excesses, its follies, its falls and its trials, but also its moments of awareness, its hopes, its fresh starts and its victories… Beyond the ups and downs of existence, we all have the capacity to evolve towards full humanity and to help one another stay on course towards the peace that is to be won!<\/p>\n

Let us stop focusing on differences that turn into oppositions and make us forget that we all belong to the same humanity.<\/p>\n

Lord Hamsah Manarah, founder of Aumism, tells us again and again:<\/p>\n

\n

“Unity is not the crushing of those who do not think as you do,<\/em><\/h4>\n

but the reconciliation of all those who think differently,<\/em><\/h4>\n

while uniting their efforts for a better world.”<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That is why Aumism brings together men and women of goodwill, of various religious and geographical origins, for whom God, beyond human projections, is the same for all and present in each.<\/p>\n

To prepare for peace together, the common ground we need is an open heart and an open mind.<\/p>\n

And what is encouraging about this symposium is that it brings together believers of different traditions and atheists: peace unites us, whatever our convictions.<\/p>\n

\n

“Everyone is responsible for the future,<\/em>” says the founder of Aumism,<\/h4>\n

“Let each make their choice:<\/em><\/h4>\n

For or against Unity! For or against hatred!<\/em><\/h4>\n

Time is pressing; we must change our mentality.”<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n
