THE AWAKENING OF ANAHATA AND AJNA IN THE MARRIAGE OF LOVE AND KNOWLEDGE
Yogis associate the air element with the heart’s centre of force, ANAHATA. Tradition says so, and experience shows us that by concentrating on this awakened chakra, one hears the Divine sound.
It is also written in the texts that whoever meditates on this chakra masters the air. He can fly through the air and be flooded with an immense Divine Love. He also develops the highest qualities.
The heart is regarded as the seat of the breath and of the transcendent Spirit. Man’s impurities, ignorance, prevent him from taking refuge there. He loses himself in a painful separateness. This makes it difficult to penetrate the secret of the sound YAM rising from the heart. It is the proclamation of the I Am; I Am the SUPREME SELF in Unity with the Divine Consciousness.
The basic work of the sensible aspirant concerns the chakra that should, first and foremost, most claim the attention of all those who progress consciously on the ladder of evolution: the heart chakra. It is the gateway into High Wisdom. Jesus Christ himself said, in the Sermon on the Mount:
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
The two centres of the heart, Anahata and Ananda-Kanda, are the receptacles and generators of the energy of Love-Wisdom.
Through the feeling of unity with all beings, through this Love that excludes nothing and no one, we can attain expansion of consciousness.
However, for individual hearts to resonate with the heart of the Universe, purification is essential. This alchemy implies the elimination of the dross whose names are: selfishness, jealousy, parasitic desires, envy, hatred, the feeling of separateness.
To go very far on the path presupposes the marriage of Love and Knowledge. Our soul needs these two supports in order to walk in balance. When the mental faculties are deficient, the aspirant is exposed to mistaken interpretations.
Great credulity and a lack of analytical mind and critical sense lead to unfortunate deviations.
Superstition lies in wait for a heart that is free and naive, but not protected by an alert and well-trained mind.
Much love with little intellectual openness widens the gap in discernment in extreme situations. A keen intelligence ruling over a dry heart feeds a pride that drives to excess.
We are thus logically led to think that Love and Knowledge are the two pillars of True Wisdom.
In this section we propose two kinds of meditation:
– One on Anahata, the centre of Love.
– The other on Ajna, the pole of Knowledge.
EXERCISE FOR AWAKENING ANAHATA
1. Repeat OM aloud 3 to 7 times.
2. Direct thoughts of benevolence towards all beings, in the ten directions of space.
3. Sit in the lotus position.
4. Breathe according to the rhythm X-4X-2X.
5. Lean the upper body forward while reciting the sound OM.
6. Place the hands flat on each knee, so that “the raised elbows form a triangle on either side of the upper body”.
7. Visualise in the heart a sparkling diamond surrounded by two concentric circles of light:
◦ Golden yellow around the diamond.
◦ Light blue surrounding the yellow.
8. Contemplate this whole while letting oneself be won over by an immense Love for humanity filling one’s heart and one’s being.
9. As the posture is not easy to hold for long, sit up and start again three more times.
10. End by blessing all beings and feeling oneself in Unity with the Universe.
Note: Although the posture is helpful for opening the heart chakra, those who have not yet acquired the necessary suppleness through diligent practice of Hatha Yoga will do it as best they can.
FRUITS OF THIS MEDITATION ON ANAHATA
According to tradition, whoever meditates on the Anahata chakra obtains the following fruits:
– He comes to master the element Air.
– He sees Love for all beings grow within him.
– He develops clairvoyance and clairaudience.
– He masters the Word.
– He acquires the power to fly through the air.
– The Yogi can enter the body of another man or of an animal, etc.
EXERCISE FOR AWAKENING AJNA
1. Repeat the sound OM 3 to 7 times.
2. Send thoughts of Peace, benevolence and Love towards the ten directions of space.
3. Breathe deeply several times.
4. Take the lotus posture.
5. Adopt the rhythm that suits your level of training:
4-16-8
8-32-14 (caution is essential)
12-48-24
6. Practise ocular convergence. Fix the gaze on the root of the nose, between the eyebrows, while chanting the sound OM.
7. Close the eyes and make the same effort of convergence mentally on the point indicated.
8. If difficulties arise, stop, then start the physical and mental convergence again.
9. After a certain number of attempts, lights and colours appear.
– One may perceive Ajna and other elements through the third eye.
Notes:
– It is good to train gradually in ocular convergence.
– If headaches occur, stop this exercise.
– With Pranayama aimed at purifying the Nadis, and with diet, these discomforts will disappear.
Benefits of meditation on Ajna
Whoever often concentrates on the Ajna chakra obtains the following benefits:
– He succeeds in destroying all the karma of his past lives.
– The Yogi acquires the eight major Siddhis and the 32 minor siddhis.
– He attains the condition of the Liberated One, the Perfect One.
Whatever Siddhis may develop in us, it is important that we do not lose sight of the goal of evolution: to realise permanent and definitive Unity with the Divine Consciousness.
The Initiate may repeat:
OM HAMSAH SOHAM SVAHA
This mantra allows identification with the Divine Breath, HAMSAH, which is also the Name of the Absolute.
While repeating this mantra, let us open ourselves to the all-powerful and beneficent force of the element AIR, which animates us, vitalises us, transforms us, warms us and uplifts us.
