Breathing and its secrets

BREATHING AND ITS SECRETS

“The science of breath is the highest of all sciences; it is a flame to illuminate the dwelling of the soul.” Philosophy of the Tattvas

It is with the first breath that the newborn enters life, and we say of someone who has just died that they have breathed their last.
It is by taking breath that we enter the stage of the world, and by losing it that we leave; this highlights the biological function of air.
The remarkable role of breathing in preserving health, controlling thought, spiritual work in general and inner harmony no longer needs to be demonstrated.
The practice of controlled breathing calms, soothes, and brings a feeling of well-being and fullness. Attentive self-observation shows its power over thought and emotions. This explains the place given to breathing exercises by the Yogis.
Air is indispensable to life. It symbolises liberating flight, freedom from all heaviness, the spiritualisation of the coarser elements.
Apart from voluntary action on the breath, there is a science of the flow of the breath.

“This science of the ascent of the breath, the most occult of all, a revelation of the true good, is a pearl upon the head of the Sages.”
It is given “to those who are calm, pure, virtuous, steadfast and grateful, and to the sincere devotees of the Guru“.
The science of breath makes real wonders possible. This knowledge of the flow of the breath can be used in a thousand ways:
– Recovering health and well-being.
– Making unfavourable conjunctions favourable.
– Developing psychic powers.
– Escaping dangers.
– Blessing effectively.
– Succeeding in all undertakings.
– Caring better for the sick, to promote their healing.
– Destroying poisons.
– Gaining victory.
– Attaining Spiritual Liberation.

“Breath is the mount of the Spirit.”
Knowledge of the occult anatomy of man and of Prana is indispensable in order to understand the scope of breathing exercises and to benefit more fully from the exercises given.

Prana.
Prana is the soul of all energy, of all force.
It is often regarded as “a kind of fluidic intermediary between matter and Spirit”.
Man can absorb the Prana contained in the air and store it up through control of his breathing and the wish to keep it in reserve.
Prana moves all that has life and movement.
Prana is influenced by thought.
The Hatha Yogi can direct it and store it at will.
That is why it has been said that there is an affinity between Prana and the mind.

The control of Prana by means of breathing and concentration is called “Pranayama”.
Achieving control of Prana requires the will to overcome the tendency to “let oneself go”, one of the ways in which the force of inertia manifests, in order to carry out a set number of exercises, which become more and more interesting.
These gradual and progressive exercises concern first the large regions of the body, then the essential organs.
Consulting anatomical charts, by refreshing one’s knowledge in this area, adds to the pleasure of the adept who has decided to make a voyage of exploration into his microcosmic universe, generally neglected in favour of outside solicitations.
