MAKE WAY FOR KINDNESS
All thoughts and actions come together. When they are benevolent, they increase a beneficial current in the world. [1]
Everyone wants to make their contribution by cultivating positive attitudes. But how can we develop benevolence on a daily basis when quarrels fill us with antipathy and resentment towards others ? [2]
This short excerpt from “The Yoga of Benevolence” (Le Yoga de l’Amour dans la Force p.45), helps us to look at this adversary in a different light, and to play down the situation. We can say to ourselves :
« Like so-and-so I am. As I am he is. As I am he is. We are both subject to suffering and death.
We are bound to the inexorable law of Life by ignorance and desire.
We are both subject to the law of cause and effect, and whatever evil we do, we will suffer the effects.
Why should I blame or call someone my enemy? Instead, I should purify my mind and wish that he would do the same, so we’ll both be free from suffering. »
This reflection soothes the mind, distances us from our emotions and relieves us of hostile feelings. These then give way to a more favorable attitude of listening, understanding and caring for the other person, which will improve the tone of our exchanges… and perhaps even the relationship itself. [3]
